The starting point for examining the present situation is the acknowledgement that we - all who struggle for a humane, cooperative and supportive society - have suffered a defeat of immense proportions. I do not refer here to the toppling of discredited governments in eastern Europe. That merely ratifies a process that has been going on for decades.
